The Scriveners Mess

The Scriveners Mess, founded by Michael Schaffner, is a good bunch of folks from across all facets of the hobby who have banded together to further the study, research, presentation, and impression for the lowly clerking duties that made the Army tick.

It is never a glorious duty, but one that was more essential to the volunteer in many ways. Without the proper government papers being filled out, the proper records being kept, and the constant need for a clerk, a pen, and an inkwell, well, the boys simply were not taken care of. Without the proper attention to clerking, the boys got no clothes, no equipment, no food, and no pay.

While many foks distain the bureaurcracy, the red tape, and the tedium of the task, still others see in it a bright light for making the real army come to life again. Please welcome the best efforts of the most generous minds in the hobby as they provide to us the fruit of their labor.

The Scriveners Mess Mission:

The Scrivener's Mess seeks to explore and educate others on the clerical and administrative aspects of the American Civil War (1861-1865), with special emphasis on the experiences of company and regimental clerks in the field. We invite all reenactors and living historians with an interest to contribute, and to enjoy the contribution of others.

Pease visit them and feed back your compliments to the Scrivener's Mess.
